When James Doyle started up his Doyle’s Of The Shamrock way back in 1884, I’m sure in his wildest dreams he couldn’t have envisaged that his company would still be in operation 126 years on. However, that is how things transpired in the subsequent years following its origin, and the company is now owned by Doyle’s great-grandson, Michael Doyle.
When the elder Doyle set-up the company initially, he employed a total of ten people, and had a bar, grocery store and hardware store. Since then, the company has expanded greatly, and there are now a total of 135 people employed with the firm in seven different divisions operating within the counties of Kildare, Carlow and Kilkenny.
The main operations of Doyle’s Importers and Distributors take place on the Dublin Road in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, while retail shops dot towns and cities around the Southeast and East of the Country. The positioning of each division in rural Irish towns is certainly no accident either, as the company was first introduced to the public of St. Patrick’s Day, and the use of Shamrock in the company’s original title is in honour of Ireland’s Patron Saint.
This company remained the Doyle’s one and only registered company until 1979, when the Importers And Distributors department was established from a 15-acre site with 70,000 sq.ft. of warehousing space and 5,000 sq.ft. of modern offices and showrooms. Since then, it has become Ireland’s largest importer and distributor of lawnmowers and cement mixers.
In terms of the products sold by Doyles Group, they can be used for a variety of reasons and in many different settings and situations. For example, their equipment can be used domestically, with items like Tractor Mowers, Hedgetrimmers, Chainsaws, Shredders and Maxim Tillers being of great use to an individual while doing chores in his/her garden.
Other than in a domestic capacity, the Doyle products can also be used in a Commercial environment, as well for Building & Construction, while they can also be of worth for Spare Parts and Manufacturing. With all this in mind, it is no surprise that the Doyle Group is as successful as it is.
With a diverse range of products, which have been sourced from the world’s leading manufacturers in the gardening and construction sectors, Doyle’s Importers & Distributors continue to blossom even in these recessionary times, as the demand for this kind of machinery is still extremely strong.
With technology being enhanced to a near unprecedented degree, the future for the kind of projects that the Doyle Group may become uncertain as the years go by. However, James Doyle no doubt had the same concerns when he started his company from the bottom up, and yet it is still alive and kicking, so what is there to stop his great-grandson from passing it on to future generations and in the process maintaining its standard to their many loyal customers?
